Here is a number that surprises people outside the uniform business. Roughly half of custom uniform quotes never get a response. Not a no, not a counteroffer. Silence. After decades of building uniforms for track and cross country programs, we know why it happens, and it usually isn’t the price.
Why Coaches Go Quiet After Getting a Quote
The quote arrives with homework attached. Many vendors send a price alongside a 40-page catalog and a request to pick fabrics, cuts, and design elements. The coach opens it, feels the size of the project, and closes the tab. The quote didn’t get rejected. The workload did.
The number lands without context. A quote that just says a dollar amount forces the coach to do the justifying. Compared to what? Lasting how long? Covering what if something’s wrong? Without answers, the safe move is to do nothing.
Sticker shock against the wrong comparison. Coaches compare custom quotes against cheap online marketplaces without factoring in what those really cost. Inconsistent sizing, graphics that fade in a season, and replacement orders every other year. A quality sublimated uniform costs more per jersey and less per season.
The timing was exploratory. Some coaches request quotes in a budgeting phase months before a decision. The vendor never follows up, the quote gets buried, and by decision time nobody remembers who quoted what.

What This Costs Your Program
Every abandoned quote restarts the clock. The coach who ghosts a quote in April is the same coach scrambling in August, ordering whatever ships fastest, and settling for gear the team lives with for years. Avoiding a decision is still a decision, and it’s usually the worst one available.
What Smart Coaches Do Instead
Ask for options, not just a number. A useful quote shows two or three design directions with pricing, so you’re evaluating real choices instead of an abstract figure. That’s how every Blue Star quote starts.
Compare cost per season, not cost per jersey. A sublimated uniform that holds up for five-plus years beats a cheap jersey replaced twice in that window, even at a higher upfront price. Run that math before ruling anything out.
Say the budget out loud. If the quote is over budget, say so. A good vendor will show you what fits the number, whether that’s adjusting the garment mix or phasing the order across two seasons. Silence gets you nothing. A conversation usually gets you a path.
Reply even if the answer is not yet. Telling a vendor your real timeline turns a dead quote into a scheduled follow-up. When decision time comes, the work is already done.
