If you’ve coached for more than a few seasons, chances are you’ve heard some version of this sentence:

“We’re locked into an all-school apparel deal.”

Sometimes it’s said with confidence.
Sometimes with resignation.
Often with a shrug that implies: This is just how it is.

But here’s the truth we want to say out loud—respectfully, clearly, and without drama:

Being in an all-school deal does not automatically mean you’re stuck.

And it certainly doesn’t mean you—or your athletes—need to suffer through sub-par quality, poor communication, or uniforms that don’t reflect your program.

Why This Keeps Coming Up

At Blue Star, we hear this question from coaches across the Midwest:

“Can we still work with you if our school has an all-school deal?”

The answer, in many cases, is yes.

Not because of loopholes.
 Not because of workarounds.
But because many of these agreements are non-exclusive or limited in scope, even when they’re described informally as “covering everything.”

That gap—between what’s assumed and what’s actually written—is where confusion (and unnecessary frustration) lives.

What All-School Deals Usually Are (and Aren’t)

All-school agreements often exist to streamline specific categories of purchasing—commonly stock spirit wear, PE uniforms, or basic apparel items. They can be helpful in the right context.

But here’s what they don’t always cover:

Fully custom team uniforms

Long-term reorders of the same design

Specialty items like sublimated track & cross country gear

Programs that self-fund through team budgets, boosters, or fundraising

And in many cases, if your team can pay for its own order, the choice of vendor is far more flexible than coaches are led to believe.

This isn’t about undermining school systems. It’s about understanding them accurately.

The Pricing Myth (Let’s Gently Name It)

Another assumption we hear often is that all-school deals always mean better pricing.

Sometimes that’s true—for certain stock items, in certain categories.

But pricing is not universal across every product. What’s competitive for basic tees or hoodies doesn’t always translate to:

Custom sublimated uniforms

Fabric performance

Fit consistency

Design longevity

Service responsiveness

And when pricing becomes the only metric, other costs creep in quietly: reorders that don’t match, designs that change year to year, delays that cost athletes opportunities.

Value isn’t just what you pay.
It’s what you get—and what you don’t have to fix later.

You’re Not “Difficult” for Wanting Better

Here’s the part we care about most.

Coaches are often hesitant to raise concerns because they don’t want to be labeled as difficult, demanding, or non-compliant. But advocating for your athletes is not being difficult—it’s being responsible.

Wanting:

Clear communication

Reliable timelines

Quality that holds up

Gear your athletes are proud to wear

…isn’t a complaint. It’s leadership.

And it’s okay to say: “This isn’t working for our program.”

Where Blue Star Fits In

We regularly work with teams whose schools have broader vendor relationships in place. Our stance is simple:

If your program can pay for its own uniforms or gear, it typically does not impact our ability to work together.

No pressure.
 No risk.
 No conflict.

Just clarity.

We’re not here to replace every system or compete where it doesn’t make sense. We’re here for the moments where a coach says:

“My athletes deserve better—and I want to understand my options.”

Homework: A Coach’s Checklist for All-School Deals

If you’re curious, uncertain, or quietly frustrated, here’s a practical checklist you can use to guide conversations with your AD or district decision-makers.

Think of this as preparation—not confrontation.

Step 1: Understand the Agreement

Is the contract exclusive or non-exclusive?

What specific categories does it cover?

Are custom team uniforms explicitly included?

Does it apply if the team pays independently?

Step 2: Evaluate Performance (Not Just Price)

Are orders delivered on time?

Do reorders match previous designs exactly?

Is communication clear, timely, and respectful?

Have athletes or parents raised concerns about quality or fit?

Step 3: Document Gaps

Keep notes on delays, errors, or inconsistencies

Save emails or examples of unresolved issues

Track reorders that required compromises or changes

This isn’t about blame—it’s about facts.

Step 4: Frame the Conversation

Try questions like:

“What flexibility exists for programs with specific uniform needs?”

“How do we evaluate vendor performance beyond price?”

“If a team is self-funded, what options are available?”

“What process exists if a program’s needs aren’t being met?”

These are professional, reasonable questions.

Step 5: Advocate with Purpose

Center the conversation on:

Athlete experience

Program consistency

Long-term sustainability

Not vendors. Not preferences. Not personalities.

Final Thought

No coach should feel stuck.
No athlete should settle for less than gear that reflects who they are and how hard they work.

Understanding your options isn’t rebellious—it’s responsible.

And if you ever want help talking through what’s possible, Blue Star is always here for a no-pressure, clarity-first conversation.

Because great programs aren’t built on assumptions.
 They’re built on intention.

And intention—just like coaching—is a craft.

For four years, I ran all three seasons—cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, outdoor track in the spring. Running was simply part of our family rhythm. It was the language we shared when words weren’t necessary.

During some of Blue Star’s busiest years, running became the way my dad and I stayed connected. Whenever I wasn’t in season, he would leave work early—no small thing when you’re running a growing business—and come coach me. Sometimes that meant hills. Sometimes speed work on the track. Sometimes long, quiet miles down country roads where the only sounds were our footsteps and our breathing.

Those runs shaped me in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time.

And afterward—always afterward—an Orange Crush soda on the drive home. A small ritual. A shared reward. A reminder that effort deserved celebration.

Some of my fondest memories were built in those sweat-soaked moments. Not because I was winning races, but because I was being seen.

The Gap I Always Felt

Here’s something I’ve rarely said out loud.

Unlike my dad—and unlike so many of you—I’ve never had the opportunity to coach athletes. Yes, I was a team captain for several seasons. I led peers. I encouraged teammates. But I never stood at the starting line responsible for other runners’ growth, confidence, and experience of the sport.

For a long time, that felt like a gap between me and our Blue Star customers.

I understood the gear.
I understood the grind.
I understood the culture of running.

But I wondered if I truly understood you.

Because coaching isn’t just about workouts and splits. It’s about stewardship. It’s about shaping humans during some of their most formative years. And there was a quiet part of me that believed: Until I’ve coached, I’ll always be on the outside looking in.

That gap is gone now.

Becoming a Coach—In the Most Unexpected Way

Recently, my daughter asked me a question that changed everything.

She asked if I would coach her team.

She’s in third grade. The program spans grades three through five. It’s not varsity. It’s not championship season. It’s not about podiums or PRs.

She’s participating in Girls on the Run, a national program designed to introduce young girls to running while building confidence, resilience, and positive self-talk.

And when she asked, I said yes.

I said yes knowing I’m far from a perfect mom.
Yes knowing I run a business that often demands more than I’d like to give.
Yes knowing I’ve never coached before.

But I also said yes knowing exactly what this moment meant.

This would likely be some of these girls’ first exposure to the sport. Their first experience of being encouraged to move their bodies with purpose. Their first time learning that strength doesn’t have to look one way—and that effort matters more than outcome.

And suddenly, the lessons my dad gave me—quietly, consistently, without fanfare—came rushing back.

Athletes Are Human First

In other Blue Star blogs, we’ve talked about legacy. About loving your athletes first. About remembering that athletes are human beings before they are competitors.

I used to understand that idea intellectually.

Now, I feel it viscerally.

When you’re standing in front of a group of young runners, you realize quickly that your job isn’t to perfect their stride or optimize their pace. Your job is to hold space. To notice who’s hanging back. To encourage the girl who thinks she’s “not fast enough.” To model joy, patience, and belief.

To show them that sport can be a place where they belong.

And that’s when it clicked for me: this is what coaches do every single day—often without recognition. You hold the emotional weight of your athletes while also asking them to stretch, struggle, and grow.

You don’t just coach performance.
 You coach identity.

A Few Questions I’m Sitting With (And Maybe You Will Too)

As I step into this new role—rookie coach, lifelong runner, business owner, mom—I find myself reflecting on questions that feel just as relevant for veteran coaches as they do for beginners:

Who were you when you first fell in love with this sport—and how has that version of you shaped the coach you are today?

When was the last time you were fully present with your athletes, without thinking about results?

Are you coaching to produce outcomes… or to build humans who trust themselves?

What legacy are you creating in the quiet moments—the bus rides, the encouragement, the belief?

These aren’t questions meant to challenge your competence. They’re invitations to remember your purpose.

Why This Matters to Blue Star

At Blue Star Sports Apparel, we’ve always believed that what athletes wear carries meaning. Uniforms aren’t just fabric—they’re symbols of belonging, effort, and shared identity.

That belief didn’t come from a marketing strategy. It came from lived experience. From runs on country roads. From coaches who showed up early and stayed late. From parents who made time. From leaders who loved their athletes first.

Now, as I coach alongside my daughter and a group of young girls just beginning their journey, I feel more connected than ever to the coaches we serve.

Not because I suddenly have all the answers—but because I understand the responsibility.

To show up authentically.
 To care deeply.
To remember that every athlete—no matter their age—is human first.

And if that’s the kind of coach you strive to be, know this:

We see you.
 We value you.
And we’re honored to be part of the legacy you’re building—one run, one season, one human at a time.

Another weekend. Another clinic.
This time, in my home state of Michigan.

There’s something different about coming home. The roads are familiar. The weather is unpredictable in that very Michigan way. And this weekend, something especially meaningful happened: my parents were there.

Out of retirement. Back on their feet. Hobnobbing with former clients who long ago became lifelong friends.

My parents may have been “providers” in school supply management software—but that’s never how coaches and athletic directors saw them. What I watched unfold this weekend wasn’t transactional. It was relational. Conversations drifted easily from athletes’ growth and breakthroughs, to the heartbreak of almost and next year, to marriages, watching kids grow up, retirements, and the tender passages of people held dear.

This is the part of sport that never makes the stat sheet.

And it’s why Blue Star has never missed a MITCA clinic in 44 years.
That’s 88 clinics. No gaps. No breaks. No “we’ll catch the next one.”

A Room Full of Running Nuts—and Something More

It struck me again how this microcosm of running-obsessed humans is really just a slice of humanity itself.

There is more that unites us than divides us.

We all love to root for our hometown teams.
We all need places where joy can be shared and grief can be held.
We all crave belonging that’s backed up by action—not just words.

This is why kids become athletes.
And why adults say yes to coaching.

Because somewhere between the first practice and the last meet, something deeper happens. Belonging is created. Identity is shaped. Humans are formed.

From the fresh-faced Gladwin women hurdlers, wide-eyed and eager to demo new techniques, to the bent-over legend who’s been part of Michigan track longer than most of us have been alive—we see you. We support you. We want you here.

Every season. Every generation.

The Gift of the Mic (And a Realization)

It’s always a treat to step up to the mic and talk about Blue Star before introducing speakers. I never take that moment lightly. It’s not about promotion—it’s about stewardship.

And this weekend, something dawned on me.

Several coaching legends in that room have been donating their time, energy, and heart to athletes for 50 years or more.

Fifty.

They have 10 state titles.

Now, some might say, “Meh… that’s only winning 20% of the time.”

Not so fast.

Look closer.

They also have years of back-to-back-to-back conference titles.
Regional championships.
Runner-up finishes.
Programs that were always in the conversation.

That’s not luck.
That’s consistency.
That’s accuracy.
That’s showing up with the same dedication, heart, and planning—year after year—to deliver reliable results.

And suddenly, the math changes.

It’s Not Always About Being #1

We’re conditioned to chase the top spot. The headline. The trophy.

But legacy isn’t built on occasional peaks alone. It’s built on sustained presence.

These coaches didn’t just win—they built something that lasted.

And the truth is, this applies far beyond sport.

It’s what builds:

a program

a business

a career

a life

It’s what I’m building personally.
It’s what we’re building at Blue Star.

We don’t show up only when conditions are perfect.

Because let’s be honest—over 44 years and 88 clinics, not all of them were ideal.

It’s who we are.

Between mid-November and mid-March, I’ll be on the road for Blue Star nine weekends out of eighteen.

That’s not a typo.

Add to that three additional conferences I can’t physically attend—because there is, in fact, only one of me—and suddenly my calendar looks less like a schedule and more like a logistics puzzle. For those clinics, I sponsor, ship product, and connect with coaches virtually through email and social media. I wish I could clone myself, but until science catches up, this is the season I’m in.

So yes—this blog is Tales from the Road.

Because something happens when you spend that much time driving Midwest highways in winter. You think. You listen. You stretch at gas station pit stops because “car butt” is real. You make calls you’ve been putting off. You sit with ideas that don’t surface when life is tidy.

And you learn—over and over again—why you chose this path.

Life Between Exit Ramps

I drive to every conference. Every mile. Every snow-covered stretch of road.

That means a lot of phone calls from the driver’s seat. A lot of voice notes. A lot of recalibrating posture and stopping to move my body because sitting for hours is not what humans were designed for.

It also means my snackle box is elite.

If you don’t know what a snackle box is, imagine a tackle box—but instead of fishing lures, it’s filled with road-trip fuel you can eat one-handed while driving.

Current lineup:

Chomps jerky sticks

Nut-Thin crackers

Mixed nuts (no peanuts because… #gross)

Whole fruit

Dark chocolate bars

And yes—SweeTARTS Ropes (everyone has a vice)

It’s not glamorous. But it’s real. And in a strange way, it mirrors the work itself: prepared, intentional, and flexible enough to handle what the road throws at you.

The Trade-Offs (Let’s Not Pretend Otherwise)

Does it suck to be away from my family?
 Absolutely.

Would I give this up and go back to corporate life?
No. And honestly, I’m probably unhireable at this point. #SorryNotSorry

Midwest winter weather is tricky. Snowstorms don’t care about your plans. Ice doesn’t respect deadlines. But here’s the thing: the contrast makes the summers sweeter. The work makes the rest matter more.

And I don’t take lightly what this season requires. This isn’t hustle-for-hustle’s-sake. This is intentional investment—in relationships, in trust, in showing up where it counts.

Education Is Everywhere—If You’re Listening

One of the greatest gifts of this season is the education.

It would be a crying shame to spend this many hours on the road and not fill them with voices worth hearing. I get to listen to giants—people shaping sport, leadership, and culture in real time. Coaches. Thinkers. Builders.

Recently, a quote from Brad Peterson of HP Distance Club stopped me in my tracks:

“Always be training your body and mind to make the last mile—or the last split—your fastest.”

Brad has spent decades coaching distance athletes at the highest level, building one of the most respected programs in the country. But that line isn’t just about racing.

It’s about how you live.

More than 20 years of my career are already in the rearview mirror. That could feel sobering—or it can feel clarifying. I choose the latter. I’m not winding down. I’m leveling up. I’m training for the next leg to be the strongest, most intentional stretch yet.

So I’ll ask you the same thing I’m asking myself:

Are you coaching like your best years are behind you—or ahead of you?

Are you designing your life and your program to finish strong?

Pressure, Craft, and Character

Another voice that stayed with me came from Wesley Armbruster, Head Girls Cross Country and Track Coach at Festus High School in Missouri.

Three things he said lodged themselves in my body:

“Pressure is a privilege.”
 “Coaching is a craft.”
“Coaching is about creating high-character people—both inside and outside of competition.”

Pressure is a privilege. It means someone trusts you with something that matters. Athletes. Programs. Communities. That weight isn’t something to escape—it’s something to steward.

And coaching as a craft? That resonates deeply. Craftspeople don’t rush. They refine. They pay attention to details others overlook. They care about process as much as outcome.

The best coaches I meet on the road aren’t chasing shortcuts. They’re building something durable. Something that holds up under stress. Something that shapes people long after the season ends.

So let me ask you:

Do you see coaching as a role… or a craft?

Where are you refining right now—not because you have to, but because you want to?

Why This Matters to Blue Star

These miles matter because they keep me close to you.

To the coaches who show up early and leave late.
To the ones balancing family, work, and sport.
To the ones who feel the weight of expectation and carry it anyway.

Blue Star exists for this community. Not from a distance—but from inside it. The road reminds me that this work is relational, not transactional. Built on trust. Earned over time.

Every conversation, every clinic, every late-night drive reinforces why we do what we do: to support coaches who care deeply about who their athletes become.

So if you see me a little road-worn this season, know that it’s intentional.

These miles are part of the craft.
And I’m training—just like you—to make the last mile my best one yet.

When coaches think about uniforms, the first thing that usually comes to mind is race day. Singlets. Shorts. School colors on the start line.

But experienced coaches know that a successful season isn’t built on one race — or one piece of gear. It’s built on layers, flexibility, durability, and choices that support athletes all season, from practices through championship meets and late-season cold snaps.

That’s why more programs are choosing to think beyond “just uniforms” and instead build a cohesive team kit that works all season long.

At Blue Star, we see what coaches actually order — and more importantly, why those choices work.

One Brand. One System. Fewer Headaches.

The biggest challenge coaches face isn’t finding gear — it’s managing consistency.

Colors that change year to year. Stock items that disappear mid-season. Dealers who can’t reorder the same piece when new athletes join the team. Long lead times that don’t match real schedules.

Programs that simplify their apparel system tend to do three things differently:

They choose pieces that work together, not just individually

They plan for reorders, not just the first order

They balance performance with budget realities

Blue Star is designed around that reality. Because everything is produced through the same American-made manufacturing partner, teams aren’t juggling mismatched fabrics, colors, or timelines.

How Cross Country Teams Typically Build Their Kits

Cross country programs often need the widest range of versatility. Temperatures swing, athletes vary widely in preference, and meets can mean long days outside.

A common, proven setup looks like this:

Race Day Core
Most teams start with a custom sublimated singlet paired with split shorts or compression shorts. This gives athletes lightweight, breathable performance without unnecessary bulk.

Cold Morning & Layering Options
Lightweight fleece tops or warm-up layers allow athletes to stay warm before races without overheating once the gun goes off. These layers are easy to remove and consistent across the team.

Optional Performance Add-Ons
Many programs allow athletes to add compression shorts or tops as optional upgrades. This gives athletes more control over comfort and fit without forcing additional costs on the entire program.

The result is a kit that adapts — not one that forces athletes into a single solution.

Track Programs: Precision, Performance, and Consistency

Track programs often have more varied athlete needs — sprinters, distance runners, jumpers, and throwers all interact with gear differently.

That’s why track coaches frequently mix and match within a unified system:

Compression tops and shorts for athletes who want a secure, locked-in feel

Custom shorts to perfectly match existing tops or legacy designs

Warm-ups that work just as well on bus rides as they do between events

Because Blue Star’s custom sublimated items can be remade year after year, coaches aren’t stuck redesigning everything when a single piece wears out or a roster grows.

Budget-Conscious Programs: Smart Options Without Sacrifices

Not every athlete needs — or wants — the same setup. Coaches who manage budgets carefully often lean on tiered kit strategies.

A typical approach:

Core required uniform provided by the program

Optional upgrades families can purchase individually

Shared warm-ups for team identity and travel

This approach keeps base costs manageable while still giving athletes choice and performance upgrades if they want them.

Because Blue Star operates at mid-market pricing without dealer markups, teams can stretch their budgets further without sacrificing fabric quality or customization.

Why This System Works for Coaches

Across programs, the same benefits come up again and again:

One vendor instead of juggling multiple suppliers

Consistent colors and designs year after year

Easy reorders when athletes join late or sizes change

Predictable timelines that actually match season planning

When everything is designed to work together, coaches spend less time troubleshooting gear issues — and more time coaching.

Designed for the Season, Not Just the Start Line

The biggest shift we see in successful programs is mindset. They stop thinking in terms of “what do we need to buy?” and start asking, “what do our athletes need all season long?”

Blue Star is built for that question.

Whether you’re ordering a single replacement piece or building a complete program kit, our goal is to help you create an apparel system that supports your athletes — from the first practice to the final race.

Ready to Build a Smarter Team Kit?

If you’re not sure where to start, we’re happy to share what other coaches choose — and why it works.

For decades, high school track & field and cross-country programs had one default option for uniforms and warm-ups: local sporting goods dealers. Coaches placed their orders through a middleman, waited weeks (sometimes months), and hoped everything arrived as promised.
But in recent years, a shift is happening. More and more coaches are moving away from traditional dealers and choosing to work directly with team apparel companies like Blue Star. And the reason is simple—working direct is faster, more personal, and more cost-effective.

A Coach’s Perspective

“Blue Star Apparel did a fantastic job creating & designing our Summerfield Cross Country singlets. Justine and her team were great to work with. They listened to our ideas and made them a reality. Blue Star’s customer service was top-notch and they stayed in contact throughout the process. We will definitely be ordering future products from them!”
 — Corey Shipe, Summerfield Cross Country Coach

Corey’s experience isn’t unique. Coaches across the country are finding that when they work directly with Blue Star, they don’t just get uniforms—they get a partner who understands the unique challenges of running a high school program.

Faster

When you cut out the dealer, you cut out the delays. At Blue Star, our direct model means you’re working with the same team that’s designing, producing, and shipping your order. You’ll know your timeline from the start—and you’ll get your gear when you need it, not months later.

Personal

Dealers often juggle dozens of sports and hundreds of schools, which makes it hard for them to give track and cross-country coaches the attention they deserve. At Blue Star, we specialize in your sport. We take the time to listen, collaborate, and make sure your designs fit your team’s vision.

Cost-Effective

Dealers add markups to every order. Working direct with Blue Star means your program gets more value for every fundraising dollar. Custom singlets, shorts, compression gear, and warm-ups are priced at the mid-market sweet spot—premium quality without the premium price tag.

Why It Matters

As a coach, your time and budget are stretched thin. You don’t need another layer of hassle between your team and the gear they rely on. By going direct, you gain peace of mind: clear communication, reliable delivery, and a trusted partner.

At Blue Star, we know uniforms aren’t just fabric—they’re part of the identity and pride of your program. That’s why coaches like Corey are making the switch.

CTA:

???? Schedule a quick 10-min call with our team today. We’ll show you how going direct saves time, money, and stress—while outfitting your athletes in gear they’ll be proud to wear.

It takes resources — and often, the budget from your school district doesn’t quite cover everything your athletes deserve. That’s where fundraising comes in.
Done well, fundraising is more than a way to buy uniforms or cover meet fees. It builds team pride, connects families and communities, and teaches athletes the value of working toward a collective goal. But it also requires planning, strategy, and a clear sense of purpose.
Here are some best practices and creative ideas to make fundraising for your team both effective and — yes — fun.

Define Your “Why”

The most successful fundraisers are built around a story. Parents, local businesses, and community members want to know exactly what they’re supporting. Is it new uniforms? Warm-ups for away meets? Covering travel for state? Or even something long-term, like resurfacing a practice track?

When you define your “why” clearly, your community rallies around a tangible, meaningful goal. It’s not just about dollars; it’s about the impact those dollars will have on your athletes.

Involve the Athletes

Fundraising isn’t just a job for parents and booster clubs. When athletes are active participants, the results are stronger:

Ownership: Athletes feel a deeper connection to the program.

Engagement: Donors are more likely to support when they see athletes involved.

Life Skills: Fundraising teaches communication, teamwork, and accountability.

Whether it’s selling raffle tickets, running a community 5K, or helping organize events, involving athletes turns fundraising into an extension of their growth as people.

Get Creative With Your Events

Gone are the days when bake sales were enough to fund an entire season. Teams today are finding success with innovative, community-centered events:

5K or Fun Run: Invite the community to lace up and run alongside your team.

Youth Clinic: Have your athletes run a one-day camp for younger kids. Parents love it, and it doubles as great team bonding.

Restaurant Nights: Partner with local restaurants that donate a portion of proceeds on a given night.

Silent Auctions: Collect donated items or experiences from local businesses.

Team Challenges: Pledge drives for miles run in practice or laps around the track can generate excitement.

The key is to make fundraising something people want to attend and be part of — not just an obligation.

Leverage Technology

Online fundraising platforms have changed the game. By creating a digital campaign, you can:

Reach alumni and extended family who may not live nearby.

Share photos, updates, and videos to keep donors connected.

Accept donations securely without the hassle of handling cash.

Many programs pair online donations with in-person events for maximum impact.

Blue Star is a proud BlastFundraising partner. BlastFundraising has the lowest fees of any fundraising software – keeping more of what you raise in your community! Plus Blast is easy to set up and secures your funds within days.

Be Transparent With Your Community

People give more generously when they trust that their money is being used wisely. Share your fundraising goals, keep supporters updated on progress, and celebrate when goals are met. Post photos of new gear, thank donors publicly, and make sure the community sees the difference they made.

Transparency builds trust — and that trust pays dividends season after season.

Make Smart Spending Decisions

Raising funds is only half the equation. Being a good steward of those resources is equally important. The vendors you choose reflect the values of your program.

At Blue Star, we believe that the money your athletes and families work so hard to raise should go as far as possible. That means:

Durable uniforms and warm-ups built to last multiple seasons.

Fair, mid-market pricing that maximizes your budget.

American-made custom gear that athletes are proud to wear.

When you choose wisely, every dollar stretches further — and your athletes benefit directly.

Final Word

Fundraising can feel like just another responsibility on an already full coaching plate. But when approached with strategy and purpose, it becomes something much bigger: a way to build community, teach life lessons, and invest in the future of your athletes.

And remember — once those dollars are raised, use them responsibly.

???? Be a responsible fiduciary of the funds your team worked hard to raise. Use Blue Star, where we maximize your dollar.

When it comes to durable athletic uniforms for team, shorts are often an afterthought. Coaches spend the most time on tops — picking colors, logos, mascots, and designs — but the right pair of shorts can make just as much of a difference for athlete comfort, performance, and team identity.

At Blue Star, we hear the same question every season: Should I go with custom sublimated apparel or stick with stock options for my team’s shorts? When considering durable athletic uniforms, the answer depends on your priorities, budget, and how much consistency matters for your program’s sporting gear.

Custom vs. Stock Shorts: The Tradeoffs

Custom Sublimated Shorts
The biggest benefit of going custom is consistency. Custom shorts always dye-match your sublimated tops so the entire durable athletic uniforms package gear looks seamless. For programs that care about sharp, unified presentation, this is a big win.

Custom athletic shorts are also American made and can be remade at any time. That means you’re not at the mercy of discontinued styles, backorders, or limited inventory. Five years from now, you can order the same design and know it will match perfectly.

On the flip side, acquiring a durable athletic uniform with custom shorts means the shorts are often priced a little higher than stock options, and inseam/fit choices are limited to a defined set of core options.

Stock Shorts
Stock shorts have one main advantage: price. They are typically cheaper and come in a wider variety of lengths, fits, and styles. Coaches who need to stretch their budget or want to experiment with different cuts often lean this way.

The drawback? Availability. Stock shorts are frequently discontinued, changed, or out of stock in certain sizes, especially during peak season. That can lead to mismatched gear or last-minute substitutions, undermining your team’s unified look. If long-term consistency is important for your athletic program and the quality of your durable tough performance gear kit, stock shorts can be a headache.

Blue Star Custom Shorts: A Perfect Match for Durable Athletic Uniforms

If you’re going custom, our sublimated shorts are designed to match seamlessly with Blue Star sublimated singlets, completing your durable athletic uniform. They’re fully customizable—keep them a single color or add your school name, mascot, or other graphics for a complete, long-lasting team look.

Built for Athletes: Key Features of Durable Athletic Uniforms

No itchy tags — sizes are printed directly into the hem.

Flat lock seams — smooth, durable stitching for comfort and long wear.

No liner — designed for performance layering and flexibility.

Inclusive sizing — XS–3XL available across all models.

Compression gear is perfect for athletes who prefer more support or train in cooler weather.

A Note on Sizing

Currently, there is no youth sizing available for our durable athletic uniforms. For younger athletes, we recommend ordering the correct gendered cut but sizing down as needed. Coaches have found this keeps the fit more natural and comfortable compared to trying to adapt adult unisex sizing.

Which Durable Athletic Uniform Option Is Right for Your Team?

Here’s a quick framework:

Go Custom if you need:

Guaranteed color match with your tops

Reliable reorders (no discontinued surprises)

Go Stock if you need:

The lowest possible price pointMore variety in inseams and fits

Short-term use where availability isn’t a major concern

Final Word

Shorts might not be the flashiest part of a durable athletic uniform, but they’re one of the most important for athlete comfort and team consistency. Choosing the right option upfront saves headaches later.

With Blue Star, you can feel confident that your shorts will match your tops, perform season after season, and be available whenever you need more — no surprises, no backorders, no discontinued lines.

Uniform shopping can feel overwhelming. Between tops, shorts, warm-ups, and optional compression gear, costs can add up quickly. But it doesn’t have to be complicated — or expensive.

Here’s a simple guide to building the right kit for your team.

Step 1: Choose Your Top

Standard Sublimated Singlet: Lightweight, moisture-wicking, UV protection. Perfect for most teams.

Compression Top: Ideal for programs that want extra muscle support or train in cooler conditions.

Step 2: Pick Your Shorts

Split Shorts (No Liner): Classic racing short, lightweight and affordable.

Compression Shorts: More coverage and support, especially popular for sprinters and distance runners alike.

Step 3: Add Warm-Ups (Optional)
Warm-ups extend the life of your uniforms and give your team a unified look during travel and downtime. Coaches love them for athlete comfort — and athletes love them because they’re versatile beyond meets.

Good / Better / Best Framework

Good: Standard singlet + split short — budget-friendly, high performance.

Better: Standard singlet + compression short — balance of value + performance.

Best: Compression top + compression short — full performance package.

Why Mid-Market Pricing Matters
Here’s where you save: instead of paying $100+ per kit through a big-brand distributor, Blue Star’s mid-market pricing brings you into the $70–85 range depending on volume. Multiply that by a 25-athlete roster, and you’re talking real budget relief.

Stretch Your Dollars Further
By saving on uniforms, many teams can reallocate funds into warm-ups, travel expenses, or training equipment. And because our fabrics are durable, you’re not replacing them every season — another long-term cost saver.

Bottom Line: Outfitting your team doesn’t have to drain your budget. With the right kit strategy, you can give your athletes performance gear at a price that makes sense.
